Waimea Canyon

One of the more unusual and unexpected sights of Hawaii is the Waimea Canyon on the west side of Kauai. Similar in appearance to the Grand Canyon of Arizona, but smaller in size, this rugged region of deep river gorges and multi-coloured cliffs and needles is an excellent place for hiking and enjoying scenic lookouts. There are a handful of short trails to spectacular vistas and a total of 45-miles of maintained trails, several of which lead right down to the valley floor. The road into Waimea Canyon climbs to almost 4000 feet from sea level with cooler air, morning mists and evening clouds.
