Kauai offers a little bit of everything in a compact area - the sunny seaside town of Poipu and Lihue in the south with its golf courses ; the archaeological sites and rivers for exploring in the west ; the stunning coastline in the north with its secluded beaches and excellent hiking trails ; and finally the unusual canyons and wild beaches on the west side. Helicopter and sailing tours are very popular and breathtaking scenic drives makes car hire a must.
Kauai has the States, if not the worlds most breath-taking scenery along the inaccessible Na Pali coast which drops dramatically into the ocean of the north west shore. Kauai is a photographers dream and has been the location for many big screen movies from Blue Hawaii (Elvis Presley) to Jurassic Park. This smallest but oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands has a valued reputation for adventure, eco-tourism and great sightseeing as well as having the States most scenic beach locations.
Lying to the north and west of Oahu, about a 40-minute flight from Oahu (almost hourly flights from 6am to 7pm), Kauai seems more isolated than the other islands. It certainly is more exposed to winds and winter storms coming from the north and together with time, have created the ravaged landscape that beautifies this island. Rising steeply to 5000 feet, Mt. Waialeale is touted as the worlds wettest place with rainfall exceeding 40 feet of rain annually. This rainfall has carved out some of the most outrageously beautiful valleys imaginable including the sun baked gorges of the Waimea Canyon in the south and the tumbling waterfalls along the east and north coast.
Our guide is full of pictures and maps to give you a clear impression of the region. We also provide useful links throughout our text so you can find out more about tours and accommodation and make reservations.
